What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is the name given to a tooth replacement treatment, made up of a two- or three-part structure. This includes the titanium plug that replaces the root of a damaged or extracted tooth, an abutment that connects the crown and the implant, and the crown or bridge, which acts as the visible part of the tooth.

Typically, Dental Implants Consist of Three Parts

An abutment and crown can be one piece in some cases – screw-retained crowns.

Are dental implants permanent?

All of us hope that our teeth will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

For patients with damaged, failing, or missing teeth, tooth implants can provide a long-term, permanent solution with a cosmetic result that alternative treatments cannot match

Dental implants also preserve the bone that supports the tooth, which naturally deteriorates if a tooth is lost. This can create weak jaws, affect speech, and make faces sink – making you look older than you really are.

How Many Dental Implants Can You Have?

There are multiple types of dental implants available at MIC, which means that no matter your personal circumstances, we are likely to have an option that can restore your bite and your smile.

These treatment options are suitable for a variety of patients and each include a different number of dental implants:

How Many Dental Implants Can Be Done At One Time?

The number of dental implants you need will depend entirely on the treatment type that suits you best.

But how many dental implants can be placed in one sitting?

Put simply, your experienced dental team can place as many dental implants in one sitting as required to restore function for the patient – provided that:

  • Individual patient needs and circumstances are taken into consideration
If the patient has a dental phobia or other health concerns, it can be prudent to either fit all of the dental implants in one go or split the process into smaller sessions to ensure the patient’s health and well-being is maintained.
  • The patient is willing to undergo treatment for an extended period of time
With all dental implants, the more you have placed, the longer the process will take. Similarly, before implant placement can go ahead, a period of preparation for your implantologist will need to occur, which will be followed by post-procedure check-ups. This will also require more time if more implants are placed.
  • The patient experiences no issue with prolonged anaesthetic use
Unless specifically requested otherwise, patients receiving dental implants will undergo a light or conscious sedation, which allows them to experience the benefits of sedation while also remaining responsive.

If patients are sensitive to sedation, minimising sedative use can be beneficial.
No matter if you would rather get all of your dental implants at once or space out your treatment, your dental professionals at MIC will take into consideration all personal circumstances or preferences when completing your treatment plan – helping you to remain relaxed and calm during your treatment.

Who Needs Dental Implants?

After treating patients for many years, we understand that tooth loss can happen to anyone, for a wide range of reasons.

There are a variety of reasons as to why dental implants may be required, including:

  • Tooth loss and resulting misalignment.
  • Dental defects from a genetic condition.
  • Complications arising from gum disease.
  • Failed previous dental treatments, including root canals and crowns.
  • Lifestyle and dietary factors, which includes smoking.
  • Excessive wear and tear.
  • Trauma resulting from an accident.
  • Tooth decay.

Although it can lead to feelings of embarrassment as well as pain and discomfort, it is important that patients seek an examination by a dental professional as soon as possible for broken or missing teeth, so the health of your mouth doesn’t deteriorate further.

If your teeth are left, patients can experience very unpleasant complications, including:

  • Pain and discomfort
  • Bleeding
  • Lacerations and further injuries
  • Tooth discolouration
  • Tooth death
  • An increased chance of infection
  • Inability to access a fresh, varied diet – which can lead to malnutrition

Benefits of Replacing Missing Teeth

Losing a tooth can impact people much more than they thought possible and it can affect every facet of your life. In addition to the obvious pain and discomfort that can accompany gap in the mouth, some patients find they become limited in what they can eat as they are unable to chew food properly – which can lead to malnutrition in the worst cases.

Similarly, it can also affect patients psychologically and emotionally, by making them feel unflattering as well as causing them to withdraw from social situations.

Modern dental implants now make it possible to remove all of these consequences, by replacing teeth that have been lost or damaged permanently. Apart from the noticeable aesthetic improvement they provide by restoring the smile, this tooth replacement method also offers the following advantages:

  • Preservation of bone – if a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone naturally breaks down, which can lead to facial sagging and premature ageing.
  • Matched functionality the dental implant crowns are structurally very similar to that of natural teeth and are frequently mistaken for natural teeth.
  • Superior comfort – in comparison to alternative treatments such as dentures, this treatment provides much improved comfort and real-feel.
  • Complete stability – unlike removable options like dentures, dental implants fuse with the jawbone via osseointegration, giving complete stability and security once healed.
  • Cost-effective treatment – dental implants London offer excellent value for money because of how long-lasting the solution is.
  • Improved oral health – as the bite is restored, patients experience significant improvement in their overall dental health, which also helps dental implants last longer!

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

If you are currently looking online for the cost of dental implants, you might be wondering why pricing is so complex.

The cost of dental implants can be based on a wide range of factors, including:

  • The type of dental implants you opt for
  • Dental implant materials
  • The timeline of your treatment
  • If you need preparatory treatment, such as sinus lifts and bone grafts

Here at Marylebone Implant Centre, we regularly update our clear and transparent pricing, putting patients in control of their treatment options and preferences.

We also issue all patients with a fully itemised treatment price alongside their proposed treatment plan, which means there are no unpleasant surprises when you come to pay for your treatment.

Why are Dental Implants so Expensive UK?

It is an unfortunate fact that many people regard dental implants as expensive.

Here at MIC, we acknowledge that dental implants are a considerable investment, but we encourage our patients to consider the price in perspective – considering both how long dental implants will last for if cared for properly and how this compares to alternative treatments.

Depending on the extent of your tooth loss and your personal dental condition, you could find that dental implants are the most cost-effective option would bring the best benefits for you.

Dental Implant Costs and Financing

To find out if dental implants are the right treatment for you, why not attend a consultation with one of our expert dentists?

All of our consultations are completely no-obligation and give you all of the information you need to make an informed decision about your dental care.

In order to better serve our patients, we also offer 0% financing for most dental procedures, including dental implants.

With yearly checkups, good oral hygiene, and regular hygienist visits, your dental implants could last a lifetime; there is no expiration date on them.

Research is ongoing on patients whose implants were placed many years ago and are still fully functional today. At stages, new crowns may be necessary, but that does not always imply implant replacement.

It’s post-procedure care that determines whether implants last as long as they’re designed to. While supporting hygiene treatments are recommended by our implantologist, it is the patient’s responsibility to maintain good oral health.

Occasionally, certain conditions or medications can decrease implant longevity. In this case, you will need to schedule a yearly appointment with the implantologist to ensure the implants and surrounding bone are stable.

Teeth in a Day Protocol

Patients can have a temporary set of teeth placed on implants immediately after undergoing the initial implant procedure, known as ‘Teeth in a Day.’

Only the implantologist can remove your implant-supported teeth, which remain in the mouth until bone and implant integration. The healing process takes an average of 3-6 months, and the final restoration is subsequently fitted.

Due to the case-by-case nature of Teeth-in-a-Day, the concept cannot be applied to all patients. Patients’ bone volume and bite are among the factors that determine whether this treatment is possible. The implants must be highly stable at the moment of placement, therefore requiring sufficient bone density to support the temporary teeth.

Dental Implant Brands We Offer

The world has nearly 600 dental implant companies, but there are only a few that can support their claims with sufficient research.

Researchers at Straumann have completed extensive research in the field of implant dentistry, the results of which have been used by rival manufacturers to produce their implant parts.

At the Marylebone Implant Centre, we use Straumann implant systems for our dental implant treatments

More predictability and faster healing times with Straumann SLActive

Straumann scientists have examined ways to reduce the healing time after implant placement and improve the predictability of the outcome, without affecting the implant’s integration.
The result: Straumann SLActive, a revolutionary and clinically proven implant surface.

By accelerating the bone formation process at an early stage, this technology can reduce healing time by half, resulting in a more stable implant. As a result, clinically challenging situations are more predictably treated.

The high strength of Straumann Roxolid means less invasive treatment

A dental implant is anchored in the jaw bone just like a natural tooth. Bone augmentation is a well-established procedure in the event that the available bone is inadequate. You can, however, skip the bone augmentation step in certain circumstances – which your dentist must evaluate first.

Straumann has developed Roxolid, an innovative material for dental implants that offers even greater strength than titanium implants. In this context, stronger means the implant can withstand a greater amount of pressure.

Dental Implant FAQs

Following a brief chat and update on the patient’s medical history, the clinician will numb the area where the implants will be placed. Then, once they verify the area is completely numb, they proceed to gently open the gum where the implant will be placed and will use a sequence of silent surgical drills in order to create the ‘bed’ where the implant will be placed.

This is usually a quick procedure that simply causes some vibration and gentle pressure. There is no noise involved, unlike when a filling is done. The clinician will then proceed to place the dental implant in the bed previously created. A small healing cap is usually placed on top of the implant and a few dissolvable stitches are placed in order to close the gum around the implant.

A few x-rays will be taken along the procedure. At the end of the procedure, the clinician will cover aftercare instructions and provide pain-killing medication to the patient.

Dental implants are not required per se, but ultimately they will support a dental prosthesis, being a crown or a bridge, that will replace a missing tooth. On the other side, dental implants offer mechanical stimulation to the bone and prevent bone loss.

While they are completely integrated, providing that they are healthy and in an healthy environment, dental implants are not painful at all. During the process of implant placement there is no associated pain as the area is numb. Depending on the area and technique utilised, the days after the implant is placed it could give some discomfort that can be easily tackled with pain killers.

Patients considering dentures have a choice between a fixed and non-fixed alternative, called an implant-retained denture and removable dentures respectively.

Removable dentures have no dental implants and require the use of temporary adhesives to create a bond between the denture and the jaw.

Implant-retained dentures, however, use around 6 implants for the top jaw and between 2-4 for the bottom jaw – providing stability and improved function.

In such cases a bone graft may be needed in order to gain bone for the implant to be placed. In some cases the implant can be done simultaneously to the bone graft.

It could vary from one area of the mouth to another, and from one patient to another. The implant can be placed sometimes at the same time as the extraction, to those implants we call immediate implants, in some other cases we have to wait for 6 to 12 weeks to place the implant after the extraction is done.

Any patient from the age of 18 years, in good , or at least, stable, general health can have a dental implant procedure.

According to the Association of Dental Implantology, around 130,000 individual implants are placed each year in the UK – but as this is based on data from 2012, the true answer is likely to be much higher.

This rapidly expanding field makes living comfortably with a complete bite, vastly improved function, and an even, natural smile a possibility for more people.
