In our last blog we began to list several steps to help you get over your fear of going to the dentist. First we talked about the fact that fear was normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Next we talked about finding the right dentist for you. Dentists have different personalities, some are quirky, some are down to earth, and others are just professional-straight forward dentists just wanting to get the job done. Depending on what your personality is like, this will depend on who you get along with best. Now we are going to continue to talk about steps you can take to overcome your fear of going to the dentist.
Remember to Discuss Sedation: There are many options that you can receive to help you relax when you go to the dentist’s office. Different things range from medication you take before your appointment to nitrous oxide “laughing gas”. Talk with your dentist to see what he advises to help you relax before your dentist appointment.
Don’t Schedule All Your Procedures at Once: Start with something basic when you are visiting with a dentist you are not familiar with for the first time. Perhaps a simple cleaning which is usually a low stress experience that will help you get a feel for how the dentist will interact with you and make you feel while under his care. This will help you cope with the anxiety and fear if you have to a major surgery in the future like dental implants.
