As dentistry in the UK has become a much more thriving industry, in this ever changing world we are much more body conscientious than before, we are looking after our bodies and minds so we can live a long healthy life with the perfect lifestyle and we want that whiter brighter smile to go along with it. However not everyone is aware that the most important part of our bodies which we sometimes can tend to neglect is our mouths and our teeth (oral health).
Did you know that there are still 33% of people who will only brush their teeth once a day? This can be very detrimental to your oral health as you are more likely to develop tooth decay which can lead to not only tooth loss but also bone loss in the mouth, this can affect other parts of your health especially if you have heart problems or diabetes, it can also lead to having poor chewing ability which will lead to bad nutrition which can affect our overall health, not to mention our smile and confidence. Here at the Marylebone Implant Centre we recommend to all our patients the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day (morning and night), especially at night as we do not make as much saliva as we do during the day therefore the sugar and acid which we have consumed all day will stick to our teeth and become more difficult to remove.
There are so many dental products saturating the consumer market these days which claim to nearly do everything for you, in the UK alone we spend over £5.8 Billion a year on dental treatments and products, however we at the Marylebone Implant Centre have some simple steps to follow which can help you to look after your teeth and mouth to ensure you have good oral hygiene with the smile and confidence you have always wanted and deserve.
- Brush Twice a day – Ensure you brush your teeth for two minutes in the morning and two minutes in the evening with a medium head toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. (You should change your toothbrush every 3 months or invest in an electric toothbrush which will make you feel hygiene free everyday)
- Dental Check Ups – Patients should regularly visit their dentist at least once a year so they can have a full mouth examination. At the dental examination the dentist will check to ensure that there are no changes in your mouth or to your oral health. The dentist will do an oral cancer screening; they will check for gum disease and tooth decay – “remember prevention is better than cure”.
- Hygienist Check Ups – We encourage all our patients to visit the hygienist at least twice a year (every six months) as the hygienist can give your teeth and gums a good cleaning (scale & polish) and they can ensure that you are cleaning your teeth in the correct manner. We all have those hard to reach areas and the hygienist can give you tips and oral hygiene instruction on how to get to them. Most patients will use just a toothbrush and toothpaste however sometimes this may not be enough to get in between the gums where the bacteria can lay in wait which can lead to decay. The hygienist can explain the importance of using floss and other dental products such as tepe brushes for just a few minutes a day and how much of an impact they can make on your oral hygiene.
- Mouthwash – We are now using mouthwash more frequently to freshen our breaths however using mouthwash regularly can also help keep your gums free from bacteria. In the UK alone 31% of adults use mouthwash regularly. When choosing the correct mouthwash for you please remember the two most important factors are that it must be Alcohol Free and contains Fluoride.
Here in the UK we are one of the most leading nations in Europe (ranked 2nd ) to visit our dentist for a dental check-up on a regular basis helping to prevent the battle against poor oral health.
