How to Prevent Tooth Erosion?

A lot of people should be alarmed to read that Tooth Erosion is now the number one reason for child hospital admissions in England.

In the UK we are one of the most leading nations in Europe (ranked 2nd ) to visit our dentist for a dental check-up on a regular basis helping to prevent the battle against that tooth erosion .

Dental Erosion is the superficial loss of enamel by a chemical process, if is left unchecked, it may proceed to the underlying dentine, recently, tooth erosion has been recognized as a dental health problem in children If you have been eating sweets or drinking soda for so long, you probably felt a tingling sensation in your mouth. The feeling almost never goes away, no matter how hard you try to brush them off. Teeth sensitivity, along with discolouration and cracking, are typical signs of tooth enamel erosion.

Some of the reasons to develop dental disease/decay include:

  • Snacking or grazing on sugary food.
  • Regular and prolonged consumption of wine, fruit juices, soft drinks and vinegar-based salad dressings.
  • Imbalanced eating patterns, for example, not eating something that counterbalances the acidity of fruit, such as nuts, at the time of eating the fruit.
  • Favouring diluted squash and fruit juice over water.
  • Reluctance to move away from bottle use.
  • Confusion about when to first visit a dentist.
  • Some conditions cause tooth enamel erosion. Acid reflux causes the acid in the stomach to go up in the mouth and wear the enamel out. Bulimic patients have high acid in their vomit, which causes damage to the enamel, as well. Take acid-reducing diet and drugs to prevent tooth enamel erosion.

At Marylebone Implant Centre we recommend the following simple measures to help to prevent tooth decay:

  • Keep sugary/acidic foods and drinks to mealtimes and use a straw when having such drinks.
  • Snacks and drinks in between meals should be tooth friendly e.g. still, unflavoured water, fresh fruit or vegetables, plain bagels, plain rice cakes, unsalted plain popcorn.
  • Avoid ‘no added sugar/low sugar’ drinks as they contain fruit sugars and sweeteners.
  • Brush your teeth in the morning and before bedtime with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Only spit out after brushing – don’t rinse with water or mouthwash
  • Avoiding brushing immediately after eating/drinking. Wait at least 30 minutes
  • Parents should supervise toothbrushing until at least the age of 8
  • After brushing teeth at night avoid having anything to eat or drink, except plain water
  • Children over the age of 1 should no longer use a bottle
