For many who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, porcelain veneers are a great option. If you have any dullness, discolouration, cracks, crookedness, gaps or chips in your teeth then veneers provide an attractive cosmetic solution. Veneers allow for instant improvement of the appearance of your teeth, without undertaking orthodontic surgery. For many it can be a life changing alteration, and helps give them more confidence in their smile.
If you’re considering getting porcelain veneers then you might be wondering, how long will they last for? There’s no guaranteed answer, however with the right care porcelain veneers can last many years.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain Veneers are thin layers of ceramic material covering the teeth, bonded with the surface of the tooth acting as a shell or casing for the tooth itself. After diagnosis and treatment planning, the procedure begins with thinning the enamel to allow for space for the veneer. The patient is commonly administered with an anaesthetic to numb the area, so the pain is usually minimal.
With the new size of the tooth, an impression of the tooth is created and send to a dental laboratory where the porcelain veneers are produced. This will be followed by a test placement of the veneer to check that the fit is adequate.
The dentist will prepare the tooth for the veneer by thoroughly cleaning and polishing to allow for the veneer to bond more effectively. After applying a layer of special bonding cement, the veneer can be placed on the tooth.
Finally, the dentist will apply a light beam to the veneer, activating the bonding chemicals in the cement and completing the procedure. As the veneer can be made with a bright white colour, it can significantly help mask any visually unappealing issues and improve the appearance of the tooth A veneer will usually have the appearance of a brand new tooth, and only from the side is it noticeably thinner than a real tooth.
How Long Do They Last?
Veneers typically last a long time. While your dentist can offer no promises regarding how long the veneers will last, you can expect veneers to last around 10-15 years provided you are maintaining a healthy oral health habit. Porcelain veneers may not always be a guaranteed lifelong solution however they can last as long as 20 years with the right level of maintenance and care. Regular brushing, flossing and using mouthwash will help to preserve your new veneers.
Taking care of your gums is also vital. Failure to look after your gums can result in receding, which will reverse the natural appearance. As veneers cannot be easily removed and replaced, you should treat them with the same level of care that you would with your own natural teeth.
What Can Damage Veneers?
Grinding your teeth: Grinding your teeth will put a lot of pressure on the veneer which can cause damage and wear away at the porcelain
Staining Agents: Substances such as tea, coffee, and wine can cause a staining or discolouring effect, which will affect the appearance of the veneer
Smoking: While smoking never a good habit, veneers can be particularly sensitive to the chemicals in cigarette smoke so it’s important to avoid smoking
Tooth decay and cavities will also negate the positive effects of veneers so it’s advisable to regulate your intake of sugary foods and drinks.
