What Exactly is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium plug that replaces the root of a damaged or extracted tooth. As a result of the missing teeth, the implant usually supports a crown or bridge made of porcelain to fill in those gaps.

All of us hope that our teeth will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

For patients with damaged, failing, or missing teeth, dental implants can provide a long-term solution with a cosmetic result most alternative treatments cannot match. A tooth implant also helps preserve the bone that supports a tooth, which naturally deteriorates when a tooth is lost.

There are a variety of reasons as to why tooth replacement may be required:

  • Tooth loss and resulting misalignment.
  • Dental defects from a genetic condition.
  • Complications arising from gum disease.
  • Failed root canals.
  • Excessive wear and tear.
  • Trauma resulting from an accident.
  • Tooth decay.

Dental Implant Costs & Financing

There is no obligation to continue treatment after your consultation. It is entirely up to you. In order to better serve all of our patients, we offer 0% financing on most dental procedures.

All implant procedures are covered by financing.

Dental Implants Offer Many Benefits

Losing a tooth can significantly impact your life. In addition to the obvious discomfort caused by a gap in the mouth, it can also affect patients psychologically by making them feel unflattering. For example, they might be unable to chew food properly.

Modern dental implants make it possible to replace teeth that have been lost or damaged permanently. Apart from the noticeable aesthetic improvement they provide, this tooth replacement method also offers the following advantages:

  • Preservation of bone that slowly breaks down when a tooth is lost.
  • The functionality of the crowns is similar to that of natural teeth.
  • In comparison to alternative treatments such as dentures, this treatment provides superior comfort.
  • Provides a highly cost-effective treatment considering how long-lasting it is.
  • Significant improvement of the oral health of the patient.

The Process of Tooth Replacement

Following implant placement, it will take around 3 months for the patient’s natural bone to fuse with the implant. Restoration can begin once the base has been formed and is deemed strong enough.

With yearly checkups, good oral hygiene, and regular hygienist visits, your dental implants could last a lifetime; there is no expiration date on them.

Research is ongoing on patients whose implants were placed many years ago and are still fully functional today. At stages, new crowns may be necessary, but that does not always imply implant replacement.

It’s post-procedure care that determines whether implants last as long as they’re designed to. While supporting hygiene treatments are recommended by our implantologist, it is the patient’s responsibility to maintain good oral health.

Occasionally, certain conditions or medications can decrease implant longevity. In this case, you will need to schedule a yearly appointment with the implantologist to ensure the implants and surrounding bone are stable.

Teeth in a Day Protocol

Patients can have a temporary set of teeth placed on implants immediately after undergoing the initial implant procedure, known as ‘Teeth in a Day.’

Only the implantologist can remove your implant-supported teeth, which remain in the mouth until bone and implant integration. The healing process takes an average of 3-6 months, and the final restoration is subsequently fitted.

Due to the case-by-case nature of Teeth-in-a-Day, the concept cannot be applied to all patients. Patients’ bone volume and bite are among the factors that determine whether this treatment is possible. The implants must be highly stable at the moment of placement, therefore requiring sufficient bone density to support the temporary teeth.

Dental Implant Brands We Offer

The world has nearly 600 dental implant companies, but there are only a few that can support their claims with sufficient research.

Researchers at Straumann have completed extensive research in the field of implant dentistry, the results of which have been used by rival manufacturers to produce their implant parts.

At the Marylebone Implant Centre, we use Straumann implant systems for our dental implant treatments

More predictability and faster healing times with Straumann SLActive

Straumann scientists have examined ways to reduce the healing time after implant placement and improve the predictability of the outcome, without affecting the implant’s integration.
The result: Straumann SLActive, a revolutionary and clinically proven implant surface.

By accelerating the bone formation process at an early stage, this technology can reduce healing time by half, resulting in a more stable implant. As a result, clinically challenging situations are more predictably treated.

The high strength of Straumann Roxolid means less invasive treatment

A dental implant is anchored in the jaw bone just like a natural tooth. Bone augmentation is a well-established procedure in the event that the available bone is inadequate. You can, however, skip the bone augmentation step in certain circumstances – which your dentist must evaluate first.

Straumann has developed Roxolid, an innovative material for dental implants that offers even greater strength than titanium implants. In this context, stronger means the implant can withstand a greater amount of pressure.

Common Dental Implant Questions and Answers

Following a brief chat and update on the patient’s medical history, the clinician will numb the area where the implants will be placed. Then, once they verify the area is completely numb, they proceed to gently open the gum where the implant will be placed and will use a sequence of silent surgical drills in order to create the ‘bed’ where the implant will be placed.

This is usually a quick procedure that simply causes some vibration and gentle pressure. There is no noise involved, unlike when a filling is done. The clinician will then proceed to place the dental implant in the bed previously created. A small healing cap is usually placed on top of the implant and a few dissolvable stitches are placed in order to close the gum around the implant.

A few x-rays will be taken along the procedure. At the end of the procedure, the clinician will cover aftercare instructions and provide pain-killing medication to the patient.

Dental implants are not required per se, but ultimately they will support a dental prosthesis, being a crown or a bridge, that will replace a missing tooth. On the other side, dental implants offer mechanical stimulation to the bone and prevent bone loss.

While they are completely integrated, providing that they are healthy and in an healthy environment, dental implants are not painful at all. During the process of implant placement there is no associated pain as the area is numb. Depending on the area and technique utilised, the days after the implant is placed it could give some discomfort that can be easily tackled with pain killers.

In such cases a bone graft may be needed in order to gain bone for the implant to be placed. In some cases the implant can be done simultaneously to the bone graft.

It could vary from one area of the mouth to another, and from one patient to another. The implant can be placed sometimes at the same time as the extraction, to those implants we call immediate implants, in some other cases we have to wait for 6 to 12 weeks to place the implant after the extraction is done.

Any patient from the age of 18 years, in good , or at least, stable, general health can have a dental implant procedure.
